Study Exchange Who: One male (team leader) and 4 females ranging in age from 25 to 57 are coming from Japan. Occupations included management (food manufacturing), artist (head of a school of flower arranging), Kindergarten teacher, Secretary at a school office, and Artist (Japanese traditional small drum player). What: The GSE Program is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for businesspeople and professionals. The program provides travel grants for teams to exchange visits in paired areas of different countries. Where: Charleston, WV. Our Club will be participating as a host club for a portion of their visit. When: April 23rd – May 20th. We will host from Sat. May 17th – Tues. May 20th. We will pick them at Tamarack on the evening of Sat. May 17th. Sun. May 18th is a required day of rest. Mon. May 19th we will plan activities in the Charleston area. They fly out of Charleston to return to Japan on the morning of May 20th. Why Get Involved? It's a fun and rewarding experience as we develop lifelong friendships and a better understanding of the teams' home country. How Do I Get Involved? Volunteer to host a member in your home during his/her stay in Charleston (3 nights), help with the activities, and/or participate on the planning committee. We need your help. Contact: Debbie and Joe High at the weekly meeting or debbie.high@gmail.com to see how you can get involved. Upcoming Election Typically, while elections are open to anyone, we have traditionally asked members to serve first as board members, and then move up through the ranks as officers. We will also be asking members to volunteer for committee assignments, to the extent you want to work on specific projects rather than committing to a busier position on the Board. Exchange Students We want to thank WV Supreme Court Justice Spike Maynard for taking time to be our guest speaker this week. Justice Maynard talked about the Supreme Court, and noted the Court is taking fewer appeals - specifically fewer Workers Comp appeals. He said it is unfortunate, but the last word on state policy is not generally the legislatures' or the governor's, but the Supreme Court's. He believes that changes made by the legislature in the past few years having to do with insurance and medical malpractice, have had positive effects on the state. Join us this Wednesday as we welcome Bob Steptoe who will talk to us about Climbing the Materhorn. To join the Charleston Vandalia Rotary Club please fill out the online membership application or forward it to a friend. Hope to see you Wednesday morning. |
