Upcoming Study Exchange
the Rotary Foundation's Group Study Exchange (GSE) Program

It appears the exchange is coming together nicely thanks to Debbie High and her band of volunteers.  The Charleston Rotary Club is co-sponsoring the exchange group along with our club.  Once again here is some more information about who will visit West Virginia.

Who: One male (team leader) and 4 females ranging in age from 25 to 57 are coming from Japan. Occupations included management (food manufacturing), artist (head of a school of flower arranging), Kindergarten teacher, Secretary at a school office, and Artist (Japanese traditional small drum player).

What: The GSE Program is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for businesspeople and professionals. The program provides travel grants for teams to exchange visits in paired areas of different countries.

Where: Charleston, WV. Our Club will be participating as a host club for a portion of their visit.

When: April 23rd – May 20th.  We will host from Sat. May 17th – Tues. May 20th. We will pick them at Tamarack on the evening of Sat. May 17th.  Sun. May 18th is a required day of rest. Mon. May 19th we will plan activities in the Charleston area. They fly out of Charleston to return to Japan on the morning of May 20th.

Why Get Involved?  It's a fun and rewarding experience as we develop lifelong friendships and a better understanding of the teams' home country.

How Do I Get Involved? Volunteer to host a member in your home during his/her stay in Charleston (3 nights), help with the activities, and/or participate on the planning committee. We need your help.  Contact: Debbie and Joe High at the weekly meeting or debbie.high@gmail.com to see how you can get involved.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS
On May 14th the Charleston Vandalia Rotary will meet at the Summit Conference Center for a Teleconference relating to Parkinson Disease.

Speaker Notes

Many thanks to Berri Fox, President of Marble King for spending time to tell us the remarkable story of her company in its struggle and success to compete.  Marble King is not just for marbles anymore – although it is the last American Toy Glass Marble Factory in the USA – and is featured prominently each year at the Wildwood, NJ National Marbles Tournament.  But the company has also diversified to provide recycled glass and marbles for spray paint, chemical mixers, jewelry, architecture, and even in mausoleums.

Through her hard work and that of her workers the company provides over 500,000 games per week to some of the biggest formerly American toy manufacturers.  Her diversification has been noticed and featured on the Discovery Channel, and the Home Shopping Network.  You can see the video on YouTube.com by searching for Marble King.

Upcoming Speaker

Join us as we welcome Tom Vasale who will speak to us about something that seems remote today – Gardening.
