Weekly Hightlights

Ghana Water Project
An anonymous donor has pledged to match any contribution you are willing to make for this worthy public health project.  The project hopes to eradicate the guinea worm, which is deadly.  If we can pull together to wipe out Polio, we can pull together to provide safe drinking water to our neighbors in Ghana.  Any contribution you might be able to make will be greatly appreciated and matched.  You always do more than your fair share but this one is important and can save lives.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS
On May 14th the Charleston Vandalia Rotary will meet at the Summit Conference Center for a Teleconference relating to Parkinson Disease.

District Youth Exchange
Bea Paine, who is our District Youth Exchange Chair informs us that we have two Countries now asking for Short Term Exchanges - Germany and Italy.  Also we have 6 short term possibilities, 3 boys and 3 girls in the Netherlands.

Short Term Exchange means a 3 or 4 week exchange in the summer which is a mutual exchange. The student here will host a student from a Foreign Country and then will go to the other students’ country. There are many other countries that a student may exchange with but the three that I mentioned are available now and asking for exchanges.

There are only a few requirements.  First they must be 15 and one half years of age.  Second they must be sponsored by a local Rotary Club and of course fill out an application. And finally, they must have insurance.

The only other cost involved would be the plane ticket.  The details of when to travel would be worked out by the parents of each student.  Anyone who is interested may contact Karen Price: Karen@wvma.com.

GSE Team Visit
Plans are well under way for the GSE Team’s visit May 17 – May 20. We have secured 4 host families. We are in need of one additional host family. Won’t you please help out? Chizuru Ishi is a Japanese traditional small drama player with an appreciation of the arts, including pictures, dramas, and dancing. We know you will find being a host family a truly unique and rewarding experience. We’d like to thank the following host families for already stepping up:

Please e-mail Debbie High at debbie.high@gmail.com to show your support by being a host family for Chizuru Ishi.

Rotary Peace Fellowship Applications
The Rotary Foundation has announced that applications are currently being accepted for the 2009 - 2011 Rotary Peace Fellowships. For additional information you may contact Larry Nelson of the St. Albans Rotary Club at 304-727-3484 (email lnelson@wvstateu.edu) or Laura Tell, Rotary Centers Program Assistant at 1-847-866-3307. Program materials and participant profiles can be downloaded from Rotary International's website at www.rotary.org.

Speaker Notes

We thank Rick Atkinson, Executive Director of the Airport Authority Board for bringing us up to date on the airport.  According to Mr. Atkinson, if the Delta/Northwest merger goes through, Northwest's service will not be reduced because the number of flyers using the West Virginia/Japan route makes Northwest's service profitable.

Rick does anticipate that a combined airline will eliminate one of their hubs - Memphis or Cincinnati.  Plans are also underway for expansion of Yeager's "general aviation" (private plane) services as thousands of relatively inexpensive ($1 million or so) small jets come on line in the next several years.

Upcoming Speaker

Join us Wednesday as we welcome Alma Cunningham of the Charleston/Wheeling Diocese to discuss an important health initiative.
