Congratulations Laura Ellis
Laura Ellis just completed her MBA degree. Congratulations are in order on a job well done.
Gabriel Project
Mary KathrynSaville reports that the Gabriel Project is delighted by the $1,000 she delivered on behalf of the Charleston Vandalia Rotary Club. Now it’s full steam ahead to begin donating gently used children’s items and clothing. Last year, under the stewardship of Mary Kathryn Saville we got this signature project off to a smashing start. This year should be even better. If you can’t find the time to shop – no worry – Mary Kathryn has become an excellent personal shopper. So donations away! The launch has begun. If you need instructions contact Mary Kathryn Saville.

Please mark your calendars for May 5th. The board meeting will be held at the AARP office on the 4th floor of the BB&T building at 5pm.

Thank for the Memories
The annual Alzheimer’s Thanks for the Memories Luncheon will be held this year at the Marriott. So mark your calendars and stay tuned for more details.
Ghana Water Project
An anonymous donor has pledged to match any contribution you are willing to make for this worthy public health project. The project hopes to eradicate the guinea worm, which is deadly. If we can pull together to wipe out Polio, we can pull together to provide safe drinking water to our neighbors in Ghana. Any contribution you might be able to make will be greatly appreciated and matched. You always do more than your fair share but this one is important and can save lives.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS
On May 14th the Charleston Vandalia Rotary will meet at the Summit Conference Center for a Teleconference relating to Parkinson Disease.
GSE Team Update
A special thank you to Ellen Cappellanti and her family. They have volunteered to be a host family for Chizuru Ishi. We now have host families for all team members. The GSE Team arrives in Charleston the evening of May 17th. This is a very brief summary of the activities we have planned so far.
Sat. May 17:
Evening: Host Families and GSE planning committee members from the Vandalia and Charleston Rotary Clubs will provide transportation for GSE team members from Tamarack to Charleston.
Sun. May 18:
1:00 – 2:00 PM - Private tour of the Governor’s Mansion and gift presentation to the GSE team members on behalf of the Governor and First Lady (thank you Gayle)
2:30 – 4:30 PM - Private tour of the Clay Center Art Museum, including a "backstage" tour of Japanese art not currently on display.
Note: In addition to the host families and the GSE planning committee, we’d like to extend an invitation to all club members to attend the private tours with us. An RSVP is required. A sign-up sheet will be passed at the meetings on May 7th and 14th or e-mail Debbie High at debbie.high@gmail.com no later than 9:00 AM Wed. May 14th.
Mon. May 19: Vocational Day
Morning or Afternoon: individual vocational visits are being planned for the members of the GSE team based on their occupation and areas of interest.
Noon: The GSE team members are guests of the Charleston Rotary Club. For those needing to do a make-up meeting (you know who you are), why not plan to join us that day?
Morning or Afternoon: based on time of vocational visit - Mary Kathryn Saville, a Reiki Master Teacher, has offered that some of the GSE Team Members may enjoy a Reiki treatment at her office. Reiki originated in Japan and is a beautiful, relaxing energy treatment for which we owe Dr Usui and the Japanese culture.
Evening: GSE team members spend time with their individual host families.
Tues May 20:
Morning – Flight from Yeager Airport for GSE team members’ return to Japan.
Thank you for your help in making this a rewarding experience for our guests, the community and our club members.
Speaker Notes
Thanks to Mike Stadajahar for spending time talking to us about his predictions for the upcoming May 13th Primary. Generally speaking Mike predicts a big win for Democrats in May and believes the general election will be hard fought between Republicans and Democrats.
