Weekly Hightlights

ALERT REMINDER
Remember, next Wednesday the Vandalia Rotary Club will meet at the Summit Conference Center in Charleston – Summers Street - for a special video conference on Parkinson disease.  The meeting time is the same – the only thing different is the place.

Water Project
There’s still time to donate to the Ghana Water project.  Michael Keeney has been collecting member contributions in a big ole water jug.  The contributions will be matched.  This is a small project that will make a big difference in the health of people in Ghana by providing safe drinking water and eradicating a nasty and deadly worm.

So Long Sue
It’s with great regret that we bid farewell to Sue Horner.  Sue is moving to Nashville and we will miss seeing her on Wednesday mornings.

Glutton for Punishment
Jennifer Willits has volunteered once again to spearhead the Reverse Raffle for the upcoming year.  Stay tuned as she whips us all into shape on what we need to do and how we can help.  Thank you Jennifer.

Save the Date
Our yearly outing at the Power Park is tentatively set for June 30th.  We’ll be letting you know what you need to do to sign up for an evening at the ballpark as soon as the date is confirmed.  So stay tuned.

WV Read Aloud
Cynthia Kolsun is in charge of the signup sheet for the Read Aloud program scheduled for Malden.  If you missed the signup sheet and are interested in participating in this project check with Cynthia next meeting.

Thanks for the Memories
May 16th is the annual Alzheimer’s luncheon at the Charleston Marriott.  If you want tickets for the event contact the Alzheimer’s Association.

Election Detox
AARP will host a 2 for Tuesday event on May 13th as an alternate to hanging around the courthouse waiting for election results. If you’re a candidate it may just be the hottest ticket in town.  If you’re not a candidate, hanging out at the ballpark for a game is a pretty good way to pass a spring evening – election or no.

Busted
Much to the surprise of Nancy Guthrie she is officially busted for cell phone ringing.  She will sheepishly submit her $5.00 fine with apologies to club members.

Speaker Notes

We want to thank Sharon Colvert of the Wellness Council for talking to us this week about work the organization is doing throughout the state.  According to Sharon every dollar spent on prevention saves six to seven dollars in medical costs.

The organization is looking at the issue of healthy lifestyles as and economic development challenge and is working with Main Street to encourage walking, biking and running trails in every community in West Virginia.  The organization received a $500,000 grant to pilot a Wellness project in southern West Virginia.

Upcoming Speaker

REMEMBER – This coming Wednesday we meet at the Summit Conference Center for a special presentation by Dr. Rezai of the Cleveland Clinic who will speak about Advances in Neurology with a focus on Parkinson disease.
