Weekly Hightlights

Water Project
There’s still time to donate to the Ghana Water project.  Michael Keeney has been collecting member contributions in a big ole water jug.  The contributions will be matched.  This is a small project that will make a big difference in the health of people in Ghana by providing safe drinking water and eradicating a nasty and deadly worm.

Save the Date
Our yearly outing at the Power Park is tentatively set for June 30th.  We’ll be letting you know what you need to do to sign up for an evening at the ballpark as soon as the date is confirmed.  So stay tuned.

WV Read Aloud
Cynthia Kolsun is in charge of the signup sheet for the Read Aloud program scheduled for Malden.  If you missed the signup sheet and are interested in participating in this project check with Cynthia next meeting.

Speaker Notes

Our special guest Ali R. Rezai, M.D., videoconferenced with us from the Summit Conference Center in Charleston this week.  He serves as co-chairman of the Center for Neurological Restoration at Cleveland Clinic, one of the top hospitals in America.   Dr. Rezai, a board certified neurosurgeon, is one of the world’s leading experts in deep brain stimulation (DBS) and was among the first in the country to perform a highly promising neurosurgery procedure involving the use of a "pacemaker" for the brain.

Also known as a form of neuromodulation, DBS uses electronic stimulation through an implanted nervous system pacemaker to treat neurological disorders. DBS is used to treat Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders, and it is being studied as a treatment for other disorders such as intractable epilepsy, obsessive compulsive disorder, treatment-resistant depression and traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Not only was the content of his talk informative, it was a first of its kind for our Rotary because it used videoconferencing to hook him up with our Rotary Club.  READ MORE »
