GSE Team Visit Overview
By Debbie High

By the time that you read this, the GSE Team will have returned to Japan. It was with both smiles and tears that we said goodbye (at least for the time being) to our new friends. We will have many fond memories of their visit to Charleston for a long time to come.

The tour that Gayle Manchin arranged for them of the Governor's Mansion and presentation of the collector Blenko vase was well received.  They also enjoyed the private tour of the Clay Center Art Gallery that Ellen Archibald arranged for them. They particularly liked seeing the "behind the scenes" collections.  The weather cooperated and a fun time was had by our guests, their host families, our GSE Team planning committee and participants, at a pot-luck dinner hosted at the home of Ellen Archibald and Daniel Steers.

Chizuru treated us to an improvisation on the Japanese kotsuzumi or small hand drum, used traditionally in Kabuki.  The day prior to their departure, they attended the Charleston Rotary Club meeting. They also had an opportunity to visit one-on-one with area community leaders that work in a profession or area of interest closely related to their own. For example Richard Merrill, a member of the Charleston Rotary Club and owner of Tyler Mountain Water, showed his operation to Masao Seki, CEO and owner of a bread crumb factory in Japan. You'll probably recognize one of his company's products, Panko Japanese Style Bread Crumbs. Some of the members of the GSE Team appreciated a complimentary Reiki Treatment by Mary Kathryn Saville.

Joe and I would like to thank everyone for supporting their visit, particularly the following Vandalia and Charleston Rotary Club members who helped plan for their visit and opened up their homes: Ellen Archibald, Co-chair and Daniel Steers, liaison for the Charleston Rotary Club, and host family for Masao; Rebecca & Tom Tinder, host family for Yasuko; Chip VanAlsburg, host family for Yuki; Di Long & Bill McDavid, host family for Sayuri, and Ellen Cappellanti & Mark Carbone host family for Chizuru. In addition to Ellen Archibald's assistance, we'd like to thank the following members of the planning committee for their help: Gaylene Miller and Mary Kathryn Saville, along with both club Presidents, Karen Price and Brad Sims.

Water Project
There’s still time to donate to the Ghana Water project.  Michael Keeney has been collecting member contributions in a big ole water jug.  The contributions will be matched.  This is a small project that will make a big difference in the health of people in Ghana by providing safe drinking water and eradicating a nasty and deadly worm.

Save the Date
Our yearly outing at the Power Park is set for June 30th.  Tickets are $18 per person which includes box seating and dinner.  Sign up sheets are being circulated so join the outing..

WV Read Aloud

Save the Date
Pulitzer Prize winning author and New York Time reporter, David Cay Johnston will speak to the Charleston Vandalia Rotary Club on July 23rd. Johnston is author of two best-selling books – Perfectly Legal and Free Lunch. With his determined reporting Johnson answers the great economic mystery of how a strong and growing economy lends itself to job uncertainty, debt, bankruptcy, and economic fear for a vast number of Americans and shows us how we can finally make things better. We hope you will encourage members of other Rotary Clubs to attend.

Honor Your Pets
Between now and August 13th, we will be collecting dog and cat collars and favorite pet stories leading up to National Homeless Animals Day slated for August 16th at the Kanawha County Animal Shelter.  Despite their best efforts to adopt out pets, the shelter still has to put down over 6,500 pets a year.  The collars will be strung together all around the shelter grounds to highlight the plight of pets who cannot find good homes.  Nicky Walter from WOWK-TV is spearheading this project on behalf of the Shelter so if you need to reach her you may call at 982-0086.  But between now and August 13th Nancy Tonkin will collect the collars and stories you wish to share.  If you know someone who likewise is an animal lover, share this with them and ask them to participate directly with the shelter or through Nancy Tonkin at the Vandalia Rotary Club.

Upcoming Prayer & Pledge Assignments

Speaker Notes

We want to thank Tom Worlledge, President of the AIA and a partner in McKinley & Associates for talking to us about the Greening of West Virginia buildings.  Tom is one of 4 LEED Certified architects who has been advocating for the cost savings and environmentally friendly these projects bring to companies and communities throughout the country.  Like so many other people, Tom is advocating for recycling of excess building products as well as a more regional approach to purchasing of building products from local sources. Both the finished project and the environment benefit greatly on cost savings and saving the environment from unnecessary emissions of green house gases.  West Virginia is moving more to the forefront of Going Green.

Upcoming Speaker

Join us June 18th when we welcome Selina Midkiff, Director of the Appalachian Childrens Chorus.
