Weekly Hightlights

New Members
Beginning July 25 th we will resume the practice started by former club president, Gayle Manchin of new members giving elevator speeches. For those of you relatively new to the Charleston Vandalia Rotary Club, elevator speeches are a way for each of you to give us all information about yourselves - in three minutes or less. It's a great way to get to know each of you better. So practice because we're looking forward to it.

Prayer & Pledge
Each week we are going to list in the newsletter who is doing the prayer, pledge and the greeter for the next week.  One person is going to be asked to do all 3 things.  The PPG person for July 18 is Danny Scalise.

Meeting Makeup Reminder
If you can't make a meeting there are many ways to make up the time. So consider the following:

  • Attend a committee meeting, even if you are not on that committee. Find out more about each committee by going here.
  • Attend a board meeting - we meet the 1st Tuesday of each month at the AARP office, 400 BB& T building.
  • Make up a meeting by going online. To make-up a Rotary meeting on-line please, click the link listed here: Rotary Club One
  • Attend other clubs.
  • Attend extra curricular activities.
  • Take a fellow Rotarian in our club to lunch - but it has to be one you do not know personally.  The next meeting you attend, you and that person have to just tell one thing you learned about the person at lunch. Lots of fun and you will get credit for a meeting.

Baby Items Month
Don't forget to participate in the Gabriel project by donating something babies need to get by. If you can't find the time to go shopping yourself, please consider a financial donation you can give personally to Mary Katherine Saville. She has offered to be your personal shopper if you give her the money in an envelope.  She will make a purchase on your behalf and return a receipt to you.

Pin Purge
Beginning August 1, you will no longer be able to pin your pin on your name badge.

Have a Speaker You Want to Share?
We are always looking for interesting speakers and this year Gaylene Miller is the go-to gal for setting up speaker dates - not the escort kind of dates but the day your speaker will talk to the club. So if you have a speaker looking for a date, please provide Gaylene with the information as soon as possible. She can be reached at (340-4602) or gmiller@aarp.org.

Brags
Speaking of Gaylene. she informed us that the new Miss Teen West Virginia is the daughter of Patty & Jim Pitrolo. Thanks for sharing Gaylene and congratulations to Jim & Patty.

Speaker Notes

We want to thank Linda Bunn of the AARP for agreeing on short notice to fill in as our speaker. Linda talked to us about Medicare Waste, Fraud & Abuse and the attention AARP is bringing to educate seniors on ways to spot it and prevent it before they become victims. Linda is an attorney and works with the WV Senior Medicare Patrol Project. For more information about preventing Medicare Fraud contact the Hotline Phone at 1-800-799-4638.
