Weekly Hightlights

Two Truths and a Lie
Another new gaming tool is being applied for chances on the Tiskelwah dinner September 6th. The name of the game is ‘Two Truths and a Lie'. The winners get a free chance at a ticket for the dinner. Gaylene Miller started us off by asking members to identify the falsehood by posing the following three questions of members.

  1. Was she born in Parkersburg, WV on the 4 th of July? (True)

  2. Did she graduate from West Liberty State College (True)

  3. Did she move to Charleston in 1998 to become the Director of the Commission on Aging (False)

Truth of the false statement is that she moved to Charleston in 1999 when appointed as the Commissioner of the WV Bureau of Senior Services. Our winner received a free chance at dinner tickets to the Tiskelwah Community Center fund raiser on September 6 th.

Taking a Chance on Tiskelwah
The Board has given a generous donation to the Tiskelwah Community Center on the West Side of Charleston. In return we received a reserved table at the Charleston Civic Center on Sept. 6th starting at 7pm. New WVU basketball coach Bob Huggins and his 3 top assistants will be speaking at the fund raiser/dinner about the importance of education in life. We'll also get an update on the WVU Basketball program.

The Tiskelwah Center serves as an anchor facility on the West Side to help out underprivileged children and families, and Senior Citizens with educational programs, health screenings, transportation and other important social services. All proceeds from the September 6 th fundraiser will be used for restoration and programs located at Tiskelwah.

Michael Keeney will sell $1 chances to get a seat at the table we reserved. For the price of a $1 ticket you may a winner. Michael begins the drawing this Wednesday morning. The community service committee recommended "that persons to attend the dinner would be determined by lottery. Members would get a ticket for $1 and then a ticket would be drawn from a separate bunch and that person would get two tickets." The drawing is scheduled for the following Wednesday.

$23,000 Scholarship from Rotary International
Deadline is September 7
How would you like to continue or complete your higher education studies in a foreign country on scholarship? That possibility is available through the Rotary Club's Ambassadorial Scholarships program.

Within the last 20 years, Rotary International has funded students from this area to travel to places such as Australia, Scotland, Germany, and Canada. More of the ideal traits of an ambassadorial scholar, the application, and plausible host countries included in the Rotary International study abroad program are located at the Rotary International website, www.rotary.org.

For more information about this scholarship opportunity, please contact Rotary International District 7550 Scholarship Coordinator, Dr. Jerry Beasley: 304-384-5223.

Speaker Notes

We want to say a special thanks to Sharon King, Executive Director of the Charleston Regatta committee for talking to us about the history of the river festival and where we might expect it to go from here. This year there are new rules for street conduct and the focus on river activity has disappeared. This street festival will now focus almost exclusively on entertainment and activities that can be enjoyed on land. This may be the way of the future for upcoming Regatta's but the event is yet another tourist attraction for the City of Charleston. Thanks Sharon for everything you do to make this festival a reality.
